My Free Sewing Room Makeover

My sewing room was in need of a huge make over. For years it worked fine but it had become a dumping ground for everyone’s stuff and nothing was being created in the cramped space. I would spend a day to clean it up and make some space, but a week later it would get messy again and cramped, so no sewing would be accomplished.

Sewing rooms are for sewing, this had become a storage room.

Action needed to be taken, and not just a quick clean. This time a whole re arrange was needed. I had been putting it off as I thought I would need to spend money to do it up, buy some paint, trinkets or storage items, but it needed doing as I was sick of stepping over everything. Looking around the house, the shed and in the room at what I already had, I realised I had everything I would need to do my sewing room makeover, it wouldn’t cost me a thing, only my time.

I spent a day pulling everything out of the room (even though it’s a tiny space, the amount of crap it holds is ridiculous) and in the process messed up the rest of the house, as you do.

I then got sick, the flu. (it lasted 2 weeks) Our house was in chaos for all that time, as no one was allowed to move my stuff. What if they chucked something important out !

Slowly, in-between sleeping, sneezing, headaches and coughing I painted, cleaned, sorted, threw stuff out and re-arranged furniture.

My new and improved sewing room. Painted and sorted.

I love how it turned out

A fully functional sewing room with not a penny spent on it.

I now have a big table in the room to cut my material on. I actually always had the table, I just never used it to its full potential. (only for Christmas get togethers) Years ago I bought an Ikea table that has fold down sides, but as I always had cupboards in the room taking up the space, it has never been fully open in the sewing room. Before I would need to use the dining table to cut out material and I was forever back and forth from the sewing table to the dining table. This drove me nuts.

I still have heaps of storage for all my jeans, material and craft supplies, only now things are hidden in the cupboards. I removed two cupboards in my clean out. That’s two cupboards full of crap that didn’t need to be in that room. It’s amazing what I had hordered.

There is now hanging space for all my bits and bobs, and the best thing is my cottons are in close reach to the sewing machine where I sit, not getting in the way of sewing. I can just turn around and grab my colour now, easy. The hanger is just an old piece of lattice that we had in the garden. I had painted it ages ago and hung it on the wall, but the old cupboard was blocking it (wasted storage space if it cannot be used)

There is a lot more floor space. I won’t be tripping over boxes anymore, as two cupboards are now out of the room.

It looks bright and pretty. It’s a space now I want to work in and spend time in.

I painted one wall blue / grey, my favourite colour. By mixing all my different sample pots and left over paints together (we had a few as we had painted the house last year, who knew there were so many different shades of grey)  I had more than enough paint to cover the wall, vamp up a few photo frames and wooden storage containers. I still have heaps left over so I will have to find more things to paint.

Everything didn’t take to long to do, even though I was sick I did little bits at a time. The painting of the room took a day (thanks to hubby helping out) and sorting through all my stuff took a bit longer, as I wanted to keep a lot of things, but I was ruthless as I wanted the space. It was also free to do.

The sewing room already had the furniture, and through many op shopping trips I had quite a few baskets and tins for storage. The paint was what we already had in the shed, I just mixed it to get the quantity and colour I needed. All those old frames sitting in the cupboard got a revamp and now look pretty hanging on the wall. A few old pattern sleeves, a piece of denim, and some pictures was all it took to fill them. My colourful bunting got hung up and gives my sewing room a market feel. The clock even got a spray paint.

Do you need a sewing room make over! Don’t put it off thinking it will cost money. It just needs a bit of time and some re arranging of the things you already have.

Anything is possible on a budget, look around at what you already have.

What furniture do you really need, are you putting it to good use? Can you re-purpose something from another room?

Can something be reused in another way? A piece of lattice fence as a storage hanger. An old tin to keep buttons in or a gift basket to store ribbons or wool.

A little bit of paint can change the look of anything, a box, a basket or a photo frame. Have a look in the shed for leftover of paint, what colours can you use or mix together. Keep gloss to gloss and low sheen to low sheen finishes together.

I had fun doing this make over, next on the list is the shed which is a bigger dumping ground for unused things

What a great job!! This is what I need to do to my mom’s sewing area–however, she refuses to let me touch it!!
The framing of the patterns is so fantastic!

    1. I don’t let the family touch my space either, I keep loosing things when my children go in there and my husband wanted to help clean out things but gave up at the door. he was a bit overwhelmed with the amount of stuff in the room. Pinterest was my inspiration.

It looks great. I’ve recently moved house and I decided my study was going to be THE ROOM. I was going to make it inspirational and just wonderful and yet, I’ve not done that yet. I’ve not put stuff on the walls and my desk is full of junk. So… thanks for the inspiration – it will be my weekend goal! #teamlovinlife

What a beautiful space you’ve created. My office space gets far too cluttered with papers and bits and bobs, so I’m going to take a leaf from your book and make it a more creative space.

    1. My shed and bedroom are next on the list. Just need a bit more time to be put aside. Good luck with the office, I find my desk is a mess all the time, I am a note taker so notes are everywhere.
